Your portfolio perspective could be holding you back

Gaining a new lens on portfolio management offers untapped opportunity

One of the cornerstones of helping our clients pursue their financial aspirations and converting earned wealth into significant wealth requires disrupting long-held assumptions about portfolio management.

For many people, this is what comes to mind:
A singular portfolio snapshot with a number of defined allocations.

This everything-in-one-visual portfolio is convenient and tidy.

It tells clients where every dollar is allocated.

It has been the standard for how investment portfolio performance and allocation get visualized to clients.

And it encapsulates the immediate needs, mid-range future wants, and long-term aspirations in one simple view.

It’s not wrong, it’s just… limiting.

What it fails to do is consider what each dollar is intentionally designed to do.

To get to that level of understanding requires thinking beyond a single portfolio and establishing specific yet separate portfolios that have their own allocation considerations— ones designed to take into account your needs, wants, and long-term aspirations.

The conversation immediately becomes more robust when there are defined portfolios and specific opportunities for allocation available within each.

Suddenly, each dollar looks slightly different and is intentionally allocated to perform differently. It opens up possibilities that previously weren’t considered, especially in the aspirational portfolio.

Conventional wisdom tells us that to invest more in long-term aspirations requires a drawdown on current needs or foreseeable wants – a fallacy further enhanced by all-in-one portfolio visual most investors carry in their mind. As you rethink portfolio allocation, you recognize that multiple portfolios exist independently of each other and are not reciprocal. It allows each portfolio strategy to be maximized – creating both a sense of safety and potential.

Where single portfolios tend to restrict opportunity (albeit unintentionally), specialized portfolios often present untapped opportunities.

“What do you want to accomplish with your wealth?”

That’s a vastly different proposition than asking what your risk tolerance is, and our questioning is designed to help you push toward what’s possible – and what might seem improbable.

Clearly defined objectives for your wealth become the driver of your portfolio strategy, not your tolerance for risk.

At Constellation Wealth Advisors, what you seek to achieve gets defined into specialized portfolios where parameters are set, and appropriate guardrails are put in place.

Then, when viewed across customized portfolios to meet immediate, mid-range, and long-term goals, even the most risk-averse person can realize there’s room for conservative investments to preserve wealth while also being more open to actively growing it – often within the same portfolio.

To further understand this concept, let’s look at the “aspirations” bucket as an example.

Defining what legacy means to you

Until this point, our clients are typically familiar with the broad picture of what they want to leave behind as part of their legacy. They know the impact they want to have and the big-picture opportunities they want to provide for those who are important to them.

However, we know that what you are after is oftentimes deeper and more nuanced than simply a goal number by a certain milestone. It requires further definition and exploration as an individual, often answering questions you didn’t know had to be considered.

It’s why we ask – what do you want to do with your wealth?

Clearly defining what you want your money to accomplish for you will shift the lens that you have on your portfolio. The decisions become more business-like and thoughtfully considered. Our job is to guide that process so that legacy isn’t a fleeting moment or a one-time generational hand-off. Rather, we help ensure longevity is the core strategy.

Your renewed lens on portfolio management will change how you think about every dollar – the ones you need now, the ones you’ve wisely allocated, and the generational wealth you’ve built. It will require your thoughtful guidance on what happens next. It’s not something you leave to chance.

Make sense of every dollar.

Your portfolio management today should evolve with the wealth you’ve accumulated, to enable it to do more than you thought possible. When you recognize every dollar as working capital on your behalf, where each dollar has its own specific purpose, place, and timeline, it changes the calculus to create lasting impact.
